Subject: My 103rd Review A Gene Autry Picture Without Autry
In early 1938, after filming was completed on "The Old Barn Dance", Gene Autry informed Herbert J. Yates, head of Republic Pictures that he was going on strike for a laundry list of things. What to do? "Under Western Stars" was in pre-production and was close to a date to shoot. Leonard Slye as "Dick Weston" had made an impression on Autry's previous picture and was brought in as a substitute renamed Roy Rogers. A few changes were made to frame the new star better and it was a little longer and with somewhat better production values than Autry was getting. It was released on 04-20-1938 and was a smash hit. "Dust" was nominated for an Oscar for song of the year, as well. Autry and Yates came to terms after that and a new Western Star was born. The film has been added to the govt. film preservation registry in recent years. It's a very sturdy little modern day western. A MUST SEE even. The uncut version has good picture and sound quality too. Enjoy
